Beauty Day 104
Find one beautiful thing every day and take a photo of it.
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Beauty Day 104 Developmental Stages
Little girl in tutu
tumbling on the floor
as chaotic as your petticoats
who will you grow to be?
sometimes yes sometimes no
never in-between
laying out your boundaries
for all the world to see
I as your gramma
just want to squeeze you tight
my days are few yours are many
independence is your right
when I wait with patience
give you all your space
you come around with gentleness
to give a warm embrace

♦
Beauty Day 103 Roosters Crow in Cold Seattle
silly willy daffodillies
calling out the dawn
impatient buds, frantic
pushing down the barn
“Wake up! Wake up! You sleepy heads!
The business day has dawned.
All the world will pass you by
as you take your final yawn.”

Beauty Day 102 Sun in Seattle
Sun in Seattle
–like shade in Sahara–
more beautiful far
than the dull gray norm
this change brings detail
depth of focus
multiple colors
caffeine for the eyes
So here’s to the sun!
more sun, more brightness
’til hearts now wearied
seek rest again

Beauty Day 101 Daddy and Daughter
it’s beautiful to watch a dad
be mommy to his daughter
not that mom herself
isn’t around–she is
and does a terrific job
but daddy’s not afraid
to give a bath
change a diaper
and take the little one to bed
it’s beautiful to watch
the daddy’s heart melt
and learn and grow with love
cuddling her in the firm way
that children also need
this daddy gives his daughter
affectionate respect
unknowingly acting as model
for later lovers in her life
a daddy who loves his daughter
teaches discernment
for all her needs

Beauty Day 100 Tribute to My Constant Friend
a constant friend is someone
who never gives up on me
someone who’s sure
whose mind’s made up
we’re in a forever thing
someone who is waiting
and ready when I call
someone who doesn’t anger
when I don’t call at all
I have this friend
his words are wise
to him I gladly sing
I’ve kept your word
I’ve done my best
I give you Day 100!

♦
Beauty Day 99 Winter’s Demise
Birds chatter playing tag
shake raindrops from empty branches
crows act as referee
hawking out the score
this new life will not wait
for the long, cold rain to end
bulging, bursting, pushing
spring enters the world

Beauty Day 98 Mt Rainier
Rainier impresses
yet not alone–the foreground
threads frame, bow, applaud

♦
Beauty Day 97 Sleepover
having granddaughter
spend the night
for the first time ever
last time she cried
and daddy had to come
after he had already settled
she cried tonight
I wasn’t impressed
as long as we don’t
talk about lying down
she’s fine building forts
in the middle of
the living room floor
I’m not at all sure
we’ll sleep tonight
beautiful little granddaughter
I’ll stay up all night for you

♦
Beauty Day 96 A Wooden Fence
there’s something about
a wooden fence
that gets me every time
I’m talking about the see-through kind
not those brick wall jobbies
that are meant to separate
so that not even viewing is allowed
a wooden fence with wooden bars
like a ladder, easy to climb over
such a style boasts the grain of wood
and permits a person to compare
which side really looks the greenest
this side or that
though winter wet deciduous leaves
aren’t green at all
mainly I like a fence
because it’s like a young child dancing
in wild and crazy polka dots
expressing vibrancy
that costs nothing
and leads to nowhere
that’s why I love to look at wooden fences
I think the adult word is
aesthetics–kind of dead sounding–
yet fences are alive

Beauty Day 95 Ready, Begin
spring crouches in the wings
wound tightly as a nearly pouncing cat
like a Broadway musical
at the moment the curtains lift
props set
the stage arranged
actors’ lungs filled
first syllable on countdown
score practised
choreography complete
instruments tuned
musicians in posture
ready
for the sudden rise
and strong descent
of the conductor’s magic wand
The show begins!
greens and pinks
purples, yellow
I see it all
in these living buds
silently screaming
all over town–
spring has almost sprung
we only need that one sunny
warm day
for all to be transformed
from winter’s muted tones
of deafening gray
to spring’s essential touch
bright cacophony
of bursting sound
a healthful baby’s
chubby flush
