Lists!

Having noticed the other day

that if it’s on the list

I tend more to do it

–except for the most excruciating tasks

those with the largest mental resistance–

and if not on the list

I remain in a prolonged state of frozen distraction 

I came to realize

this late in life

that it’s best for me to write

a long list of all the things that’d make me happier

if I accomplished them “today”

today was one of those days

after two days of basically nothing but rest

I slowly creakingly with prayer got started

gaining momentum as I went

and now I have a beautiful list

of checked-off items and

Feeling just sick enough

with a strongish ache in the back

and a craving for rest

to justify canceling

the evening’s social activity

and the air being chillish

it seemed a good opportunity

to sit warmly by the fire

the best book I’ve run into

after years of searching

on my favorite topic

the hot tea was good

the water cool and refreshing

the book great

but mainly it was the fire

sput-sput-sputtering warm flames

that captured me

and healed my soul

no busy bees about their daily tasks

that can’t be done without

just the space and time

to contemplate

in the cool inviting morning air

he knows where to find you
